Things are hotting up...

Not long to go now people! We now appear to be showing about 20 artists at the exhibition, a ridiculous amount I know, but the idea was always to get talented artists who find it hard to show work in other contexts a place to exhibit and be seen by the public, so everything is going the way it should be!

Everyone who wants to submit work must send a statement of up to 300 words about your work and some images also to Hannah Jump at hannyj@googlemail.com.

Well its Sunday today, so I will be going down to the Mayflower steps in a moment to paint there all day. This may sound insane, but anyone who wishes to work on some art and get it seen by the public should come along and talk to the clown. I'll be there till 5 or 6.

Meeting will obviously be at 6pm in the Arts Centre on Wednesday as usual, and it is absolutely vital for artists wishing to exhibit to come along if we want things to run smoothly, so hopefully we will see alot of you there. The idea of this collective is supposed to be that we collectively get together and talk, so come and show some solidarity!

Right, be sure to keep promoting the event in all of your networks, opening night is Thursday the 9th from 6 til about 9, and we want it to be a 'biggun'!

Hope everyone is feeling as excited about it as I am....

Train Rolling Faster

Hi everyone.

Well its been a very busy week. The meeting on Wednesday went well, there was little time to discuss the Picnic, which I think we all agreed was an effective bonding exercise, which helped us to really start making proper plans for the exhibition.

We have at least 10 artists to accommodate, so we can either focus on getting the space to be very carefully divided between us or we could aim for a bit more of a chaotic looking approach. If anyone has any thoughts about this please post what you think here.

We will be having some live sound generation courtesy of Oddstep Deployment Unit and Mummy Thinks We're Special whizzkid Alex Johnson. More artists will be announced as things develop.

The posters are currently being designed by Hannah and we will hopefully have something looking right in the next couple of days. We have all agreed to put in £10 to get it all looking right, especially the wine table, very important. Of course the most important thing is the work, so please carry on slaving away at your creations so that we have something that looks suitably kickass for the opening night on the 9th, I'm sure we will!

We're meeting again at the Arts Centre cafe at 6pm on Wednesday, please come along as this is an artist lead community, so it can't be lead efficiently unless you, the artists come and do some leading!

Thats all for now,
Dan

Stuff's Starting to Happen

Hi everyone. The meeting in the arts centre on Wednesday went well, we seem to be developing well as a team and beginning to progress with some good ideas and efficient division of duties.

Whatever peope are able to contribute at the moment to assist U:1 is definitely welcome, the world is our oyster, and it will be easier for us to devour this oyster together. Hang on that makes no sense. Or does it?

Well the 'picnic' on Saturday was an experience thats for sure. It has confirmed that there is good work in production by our rapidly expanding army of artists, and a there was a useful exchange of ideas. And cream teas. It was a bit wet but we soldiered on nevertheless.

Until it started raining 'properly', then we sat in the shade at everyone's favourite filth ridden alcoholic dump Voodoo Lounge and started to discuss the upcoming exhibition. Its looking to be an interesting show, with sound art elements on the opening night (Sept 9th), and some really interesting work from a diverse range of some damn interesting practitioners.

Then when the clouds cleared we went to perform the slightly alcohol fuelled noise orchestra performance, at which no one got arrested. Which is a shame as that would have been good publicity.

We'll all be meeting again at 6pm in the Arts Centre on Wednesday, so hope to see as many of us there as possible.

Tuesday, 10 August 2010

Hi everyone, we're having a meeting on Wednesday 11th August 6pm in the Arts Centre Cafe. This is to discuss arrangements for the U:1 event at the Jigsaw Garden on the 14th, which is THIS Saturday, so time is ticking and its all getting very exciting. So it would be great if we could have as big a crowd as possible at Wednesday's meeting so we all can have a good idea of what to expect, see you there!

Hopes for the New U1

Hello to all of you associated with U1 Studios and welcome to the official blog. This blog will be a point of reference for both veterans and newcomers to gain vital information about what's going on. Always feel free to leave feedback, as U1 is an artist lead community, the artists being us of course!

The most important piece of news this week is the outdoor event in the Jigsaw Garden (Between Drake Circus and the Roland Levinsky Building) on Saturday the 14th starting at 2pm, just 5 days to go!

Feel free to bring whatever art materials you like to the event, whether it be a sketchbook, an easel and paints, or even a solid block of marble and a chisel, whatever you like. Also bring food and drink. We can use it as an opportunity to get together and see what work everyone is currently producing and a chance for everyone to communicate in a stimulating environment. Then at 4pm there will be an unplugged fluxus style experimental noise orchestra. If you wish to participate, please bring whatever you wish to use as an 'instrument', kazoos, drums, bin lids, lawn mowers, so long as it is wireless it is allowed. We are to stand unified, and improvise a collective generation of sound for exactly 20 minutes, made by whatever 'instruments' have been brought.
We also have an exhibition lined up from the 9th to the 11th of September in Batter Street at the Arts Centre. One month is a relatively short amount of time to arrange an exhibition from scratch, so we must all think critically about what work we are likely to have ready to exhibit at that time.
It is likely that we will have another meeting in Batter Street this week to make sure everything is prepared for Saturday, so everyone keep checking your emails.
Thats all the news for now, more will follow...
